Over the past decade, many mainline Protestant denominations and a significant number of congregations have focused on becoming Open & Affirming places of worship that welcome everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. With changes in our government and our culture, it’s time for us to refresh our commitment to faithful LGBTQ+ inclusion inside our churches and ministry settings, and take our extravagant welcome outside the walls of church. It’s time for us to move beyond “pray and be” to “go and do”! Join us for a series of keynote and workshop presentations where we will learn and grow together as witnesses of Jesus’ radical gospel of inclusion, with a closing panel discussion where we will be equipped to take the message of love and welcome into the world!

Keynote Presenter:  Nicole Garcia

Nicole is a self-identified transgender Latina. She began her transition, male-to-female, while employed as a law enforcement officer for the state of Colorado. She successfully completed her transition in 2005, and resigned her position as a state parole officer in 2013 to finish her counseling education. In 2014, she completed her M.A. in Counseling from the University of Colorado-Denver, and opened her private counseling practice, Nicole Garcia Counseling, LLC, in Longmont, Colorado. Nicole is also a Masters of Divinity student in the specialized M.Div. Distance Learning Program at Luther Seminary, and will graduate in May 2018.

Nicole has served on the boards of ReconcilingWorks: Lutherans for Full Participation, which advocates for the full welcome, inclusion, and equity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Lutherans in all aspects of the life of their Church, congregations, and community; Interfaith Working Group, and One Colorado. Nicole is one of 9 featured trans* Christians in the January 18, 2017 article in The Christian Century: How Do You Hold Your Trans Identity Together and Your Life of Faith?
